Sadiq Khan, the recently elected Mayor of London, has announced that the Night tube will run on the Central and Victoria lines from 19 August, and will be introduced on the Northern, Jubilee, and Piccadilly lines over the autumn. Getting the Night Tube implemented has been a priority of Khan’s, in order to grow London’s night-time economy.
The launch of the Night Tube has been delayed over the past year by disputes with the RMT union who have raised questions about the possibility of safely implementing the Night Tube in the midst of cuts to Transport for London, as well as concerns about working hours.
According to figures from the Mayor’s office, late night tube journeys are increasing significantly, along with demand for travel on night buses. It is claimed that more than half a million people use the tube on Fridays and Saturdays after 10pm.
